Released in November 2009, Rihanna’s fourth studio album Rated R debuted atop the Billboard R&B Albums chart at #1and was the biggest first-week Soundscan tally of Rihanna’s career. The eagerly anticipated album arrived to a chorus of acclaim from critics and fans alike. Rolling Stone raved “one of the best pop records of the year.” The Chicago Sun Times called it “by far the best, most layered and most heartfelt effort of the 21-year-old artist's career.” In its year-end recap, Entertainment Weekly named Rated R the Pop Album of the Year.
